Not Fade Away
So, I decided to make this the first 'real' post for a couple reasons. First, I don't mean for this to be a space of 'high culture,' though, by consequence of my interests in the arts it might very well become one incidentally. Thus, I thought it'd be interesting to start things off with some tunes! Second, I figure I'll be returning to that first letter frequently, and you might too! So, I thought it'd also be meaningful to have this song right nearby.
Not Fade Away was first written, performed, and produced by Buddy Holly alongside his band The Crickets. The Rolling Stones and Sheryl Crow both have chart-topping covers, however, in my opinion, the definitive covers were performed by the Grateful Dead.
Having been played 532 times, Not Fade Away was the seventh most common song in the band's repertoire and provided a cue to get up and get jiggy. While the song is great to dance to - and certainly sounds fantastic - it's the lyrics I'd like to direct attention to:
"I wanna tell you how it's gonna be, you're gonna give your love to me,
I wanna love you night and day, you know my love not fade away.
You know my love not fade away, not fade away!
My love is bigger than a Cadillac, I try to show you but you drive me back,
Your love for me has got to be real, you're gonna know just how I feel.
Our love is real, not fade away, not fade away!"
While seemingly sparse, the power accompanied by the Dead music brings these lyrics to a level of near-primal expression. This is why I return to the various renditions of this song quite frequently. There's something about "our love is real, not fade away" that encapsulates us. Our love is very real and it will not fade away - not so long as I have anything to say about it! A lot of lyrics make me think of you, but none so much so as these.
- This is where I nerd-out -
If you enjoyed the song, it was extremely common for the dead to perform an NFA>Goin down the road feelin bad>NFA sandwich. If you're interested in an awesome rendition of this sandwich you can check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2O6tf1SpkCs
